AUSTRALIA 'S BEST CARS WINNERS ANNOUNCED

Australians' increasing take up of value-for-money, urban-focussed vehicles has been reflected in the high quality of small cars featured in the 2010 Australia's Best Cars awards program, with winners announced at a gala event held at Randwick Racecourse in Sydney this evening.

Australia's peak motoring group, the Australian Automobile Association, tonight announced the winners from 45 finalists across 15 categories.

The Best Cars judging panel, made up of experts from Australia's motoring organisations - NRMA Motoring & Services, RACV, RACQ, RAASA, RACWA, RACT and AANT - commented on the increasing availability, economy and features of the small urban cars.

The Best Light Car Under $20,000 award went to the Hyundai i20 Active, from the Volkswagen Polo 77 TSI Comfortline and the Ford Fiesta CL.

Australia's Best Cars Chief Judge, Mark Borlace, said other winners included the BMW M3 in the Best Sports Car Over $80,000 and the Volkswagen Tiguan 103TDI as the Best SUV Under $40,000.

"All the finalists were vehicles of the highest quality, performance and presentation, and thismade the judging panel's job very difficult," Mr Borlace said.

"The 15 categories reflect the diversity of the Australian market, where there are more vehicle manufacturers fighting for the Australia's car buying dollar thanmost other markets in the world."

The finalists have been selected following a comprehensive review of more than 300 vehicles by the judges - from light cars through to large cars, sports cars, SUVs and all-terrain vehicles. The winners were then selected following an intensive week-long series of tests at the Australian Automotive Research Centre at Anglesea in Victoria.

AAA Chief Executive, Mike Harris, said the judges noted the increasing improvements across most vehicles categories but were particularly pleased with the small cars.

"This is a vehicle category that is becoming increasingly popular among Australian motorists, particularly those living in urban areas," Mr Harris said.
