Boost for best business ideas

A competition being run by three shire councils in western Victoria could be the ticket to a new life for entrepreneurs willing to move there. Imagine if you could get thousands of dollars to escape the rat race - and start your dream business.

It doesn't have to be a dream: three Victorian councils are offering an opportunity to kick-start your new life. Throw in million dollar views, affordable housing and the absence of peak hour traffic and the offer is almost too good to be true.

As Angela Hunt from the regional development boards explains, on offer to the best presented entrepreneur is $20,000 in incentives and assistance to help start up a business. The hidden bonus is: you have to move to one of the most picturesque places in regional Australia. "Initially, it will cover the rent for the shopfront," Angela said.

"We'll do some signage on the shopfront, essential things like setting up utilities, broadband internet connection, mobile phones those types of things. Some branding logo work, website development. "We'll organise newspaper subscriptions, membership within local business associations."

There are also discount loans from the community Bendigo Bank, memberships to sporting clubs and financial and marketing advisors available at no charge. Angela said the councils did not mind what kind of business ideas were pitched.

"Anything, we don't really mind," she said. "It doesn't matter if it's cafes if it's a retail business, as long as people have really thought through their business plan."
